Free, or low cost substitutes for whole wheat foods (wink)

So recently I was informed that I’ve got what the old timers used to refer to as “The Sugar Diabetes”. As a result, in an effort to cut down on my carbs, or as we call them in our house carbonhydrates…because it is fun…I have totally eliminated white bread and other white flour products from my diet. I have switched entirely to whole grain.

I am finding that to be expensive, and I have come up with a few substitute food items to replace their whole wheat counterparts, for you to consider!

For example…Steel cut oats? Simple. Go on out into the dooryard and shake some tall grass, golden rod, cattails, ragweed…And La-la! A free substitute for whole grain oats!.

Look at the free seeds and grains! Yours for the shaking!!!

It is moist and sticky like the white bread kind!

Do you miss flour tortillas? Me too! I’ve tried the whole wheat ones, and they are pretty good. But again, they can be costly! So what can you do? Wrap your sandwich meat, veggies, and cheese in several layers of toilet paper!  BOOM! EXACT SAME THING!!!! (Just be sure to use the unscented kind! )

The greasy spots infuse wonderful flavors for variety!

But the best substitution I have found to date? I LOVE bagels! They were SO YUMMY! The whole wheat counterparts don’t seem to have much variety, and again….They are costly. If you moisten a pizza box, and microwave it for fifteen or twenty seconds? I bet in a blind taste test, you will choose the pizza box EVERY SINGLE TIME! And the best part is if your family gets different toppings on their pizzas, you get a variety of flavors infused!

******With all diet modifications, I suppose you should check with your doctor before trying these variations on low carbs, and high fiber, but I am willing to bet these changes will have less chemical additives than most processed foods!******

About Doug Alley

I grew up in Bath, Maine in an upper lower class family with 3 step sisters, a step brother, and a little sister. After high school I spent 3 years serving in the USAF at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage AK. I've competed in, and won, demolition derbies. I've competed in, and never won, stock car races. I am the 47-year-old father of an 11-year-old boy who is pretty sure he is smarter than I ever was. We live on a little less than an acre of land in a 1973 mobile home in Stetson with my wife Jen, some cats, a few chickens, and rabbits, and a couple of goats. I hunt, fish, camp out, dabble in photography, gardening, and I cook in variable degrees of near success.
